C Roger Lewis – Stringin Beans And Singin Hymns

[Intro] This is an old song from the mountains. "Bean Stringin's" were a favorite social time. Everyone
raised a garden and the beans had to have the strings removed and be broken up for canning. This was boring
work, so why not do it while you visited and sang with others.

The chorus is made up from titles of old hymns that used to be favorites.

The original author is unknown, so I have attributed it to my friend and mentor Charles Roger Lewis who used
to sing it all over the hills of Eastern Kentucky.

Stum in 4/4 time and emphasize alternating bass strings

[Verse 1]

C C7 F C
Well I remember in my childhood, that old homestead in the mountains
                                                           G7
Everybody gettin' ready, it's Sunday Meetin' dinner on the grounds
       C C7 F C
It was always such lovely weather, when this good crowd got together
                                                   G7 C
People singin', voices ringin' Stringin' Beans and Singin' Hymns.

[Chorus]

C C7 F C
Precious Memories, In the Garden, When the Saints Go Marchin' In,
                                                                            G7
Holy, Holy, Holy, A Little Talk With Jesus, There is a Fountain, Freed From Sin,
        C C7 F C
Further Along We'll Understand It, Oh Rugged Cross, Beyond The Blue,
                                                        G7 C
When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, It Is No Secret What God Can Do

[Verse 2]

C C7 F C
Precious Mamma was the proudest, dear ole Papa sang the loudest,
                                                     G7
Cousin Anna sang soprana, Uncle Casey brought in the bass.
          C C7 F C
If I were dyin' one wish allowed me. This I'd make it very proudly
                                                     G7 C
Let me join them, way up yonder, Stringin' Beans and Singin' Hymns.
