The vertical bar symbols around chords, e.g.  | G D | represent a measure, i.e. 4 beats.
I have used this mainly to indicate where the chord changes are quicker than usual.
The asterisk after some of the G chords are to indicate that the guitar plays a descending G-F#-E bass note
figure, but this is totally optional, just listen to the record if you want to imitate it :)
